It'll be a great moment for the country as the 'Vikram' module on the lunar surface in a few hours from now.

Here's a timeline of the entire moon mission
September 18, 2008 : The then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Cabinet approved the Chandrayaan-2 lunar mission. The subsequent years went into mission planning and execution with home-grown technology used for the expedition.
July 15, 2019: The launch of Chandrayaan 2 was called off about an hour before the launch due to technical snag.
July 22, 2019 : ISRO successfully launched Chandrayaan-2 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
July 24, 2019 First earthbound orbit-raising manoeuvre for Chandryaan-2 spacecraft performed successfully.
July 26,2019 Second earthbound orbit-raising manoeuvre for Chandryaan-2 spacecraft performed.
July 28,2019 Third orbit-raising manoeuvre performed.
August 3, 2019 ISRO released the first set of earth pictures captured by Chandrayaan 2
August 6, 2019: Fifth and the last orbit-raising manoeuvre performed
August 14, 2019: After revolving around the earth's orbit for nearly 23 days, the spacecraft entered the Lunar Transfer Trajectory.
August 20, 2019: Chandrayaan-2 successfully inserted into lunar orbit.
August 22,2019: ISRO released first moon image captured by Chandrayaan-2's LI4 Camera.
September 1, 2019: The fifth and lunar manoeuvre executed successfully.
September 3, 2019: The first de-orbiting manoeuvre performed successfully in four seconds.
September 4, 2019: The second de-orbiting manoeuvre executed in nine seconds.
September 7, 2019: The Vikram lander of Chandrayaan 2 scheduled to soft-land on moon between 1.30 am and 2.30 am on Saturday. It will be followed by the rollout of rover 'Pragyan' between 5.30 a.m and 6.30 a.m ( Ct'sy ANI)

Why India’s landing on the moon is so important
Why is India’s landing on the moon so important? Isro is attempting to soft land a lander in the south polar region of the moon, the first time by any space agency. It is also the first time Isro is demonstrating a technology to land a spacecraft on a celestial body. This would help the space agency to build capabilities for its human spaceflight programme Gaganyaan and even landing a spacecraft on Mars. Chandrayaan-1 mission had an orbiter that went around the moon and an impactor that crashed on the moon’s surface. This helped the world discover for the first time huge presence of water on the moon. ( Raghu Krishnan, Technology Editor)

Only 37% of all Moon landing attempts have been successful
Vikram lander is currently hovering around the moon at a orbit height of 35kmX100km. The lander would slowly make its descent on the lunar surface between 1.30 and 2.30 am. A few metres above the moon's surface, the engines will be switched off so that the dust doesn't kick off when it lands. Once Vikram settles, Pragyan, the rover will roll out. Only 37% of all Moon landing attempts have been successful.

Before moon, Vikram did tests in Karnataka
In October 2016, engineering models of the lander were tested in Challakere in Chitradurga district of Karnataka. Isro built around 10 craters - recreated the lunar surface to help assess the ability of the lander’s sensors to select a landing site. (Raghu Krishnan, Technology Editor)

Vikram, which is the Sanskrit term for ‘valour’. It is named after Vikram Sarabhai, the father of the Indian space programme. The preliminary configuration study of the lander was completed in 2013 by the Space Applications Centre (SAC) in Ahmedabad. Vikram can safely land on slopes up to 12 degrees.

"It was great travelling with you so far Vikram. Best of luck! I hope you reach the South Pole soon," said the lunar orbiter. To this, the lander replied, "It was quite the journey indeed! I'll see you around - in the orbit."

And, there is politics
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has attacked the government saying that the mission's launch is an attempt to divert attention from 'economic disaster.' "As if the Chandrayaan launch is the first in the country. As if before they came to power, no such missions were taken up. It is an attempt to divert attention from economic disaster," she said in the state Assembly.
